Description

The next addition to Jacksonville's budding sports tourism landscape could be something we have never thought of. It's called a Velodrome - a bicycle racing track that national cycling leaders think is a perfect fit for Jacksonville. Why would an outdoor Velodrome make sense for Jacksonville? How much cash could it generate? The city already hosts a variety of national tournaments and other events at the Cecil Commerce center. The events are expected to generate millions of dollars in revenue. A velodrome would fit well with Jacksonville's goal to become a destination for recreational and sporting enthusiasts. The city would be in charge of final construction and maintenance, with a Velodrome association managing programming and activities at the track. Construction cost, which could approach $2.5 million dollars, would be paid for through public and private donations. Jacksonville makes sense for a velodrome because of it's location. The southeast is an untapped market for bicycle track racing as there are only a few other velodromes in the region. Located 1 1/8 mile west of Otis Road on West Beaver St. in the developing Cecil Commerce corridor. Track cycling is on the rise in the United States. We have a tremendous population base that is underserved by this sport. Jacksonville's Wally McGregor Velodrome location is rural, the rail trail and two lane roads near the track run past pastures and wooded areas. "If you build it, they will come."
